David L. Hoeffel
April 30, 1930 ~ June 1, 2017 (age 87) 87 Years OldDavid L. "Puffer" Hoeffel, 87, of Defiance, passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.
He was born on April 30, 1930 to Victor and Matilda (Goller) Hoeffel in Defiance. On October 29, 1955 he married Mary Louise (Romaine) Hoeffel, who resides in Defiance. Dave proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Dave was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, and sang in the church choir. He was also a member of VFW #3360, Elks Lodge #147, and the Auglaize Country Club. He graduated from Defiance High School in 1948, where he had the privilege of playing on the District Championship basketball team of 1947. After serving in the Army he attended Toledo Barber College. He worked at General Motors for 43 years, retiring in 1991. During his very active life, he played on Maag's Cafe slow-pitch softball team for many years, and was a Scout Master for St. Mary's Cub Scouts Pack 76. Dave served on the Skylark Club Adult Board, was on the City Council from 1980 to the 1990's, was a Trustee of the Lakota Ridge Condo Association, and also served on the City Planning Commission. He was also a proud member of the Dum Schiz Social Group. Dave loved life and will be sadly missed by his family and so many good friends.
Dave is survived by his loving spouse of 61 years, Mary Hoeffel of Defiance, daughter Gina (Mark) Slocum of Hess Lake, Newaygo, Michigan, sons, Daniel J. Hoeffel of Apache Junction, AZ, and David J. (Melissa) Hoeffel of Defiance, brother, Thomas Hoeffel of Sartell, MN. He was blessed with six grandchildren; Valerie, Matthew, Monika, David, Emily, and Brock, and four great-grandchildren; Julia, Jayla, Miley, and Kandynce, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Patricia Ryan, and brother, Philip Hoeffel.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 8:00 pm on Monday, June 5, 2017 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at St. Mary Catholic Church, with Father Randy Giesige officiating. Burial will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery, with graveside military rites accorded by VFW #3360.
Memorials are suggested to the Holy Cross Catholic School, or St. Mary Catholic Church.
