Roger Edwin Duerk, 93, of Defiance, passed peacefully on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.
Dad was born on September 29, 1923 in Defiance, Ohio, son of F. Christ and Helena (Ruess) Duerk. In 1944, he married Thelma Maass, who survives him.
Roger served in the Air Force from 1944 to 1945. He also served as a Defiance 1st Ward Councilman, Councilman-At-Large, and as President of Council. He then served on the Civil Service Commission.
Dad enjoyed golf and was on the board at Auglaize Country Club, and also was a Past President of the Board at Auglaize Country Club.
Roger was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, and a member of the Defiance Volunteer Fire Department. In 1985, he retired from his position as maintenance supervisor at Johns Manville.
Dad loved life and especially enjoyed spending time with all of his family
Preceding him in death were his parents, a sister, Margie Moninger, and three brothers, Harland Duerk, Charles Duerk, and Junior Duerk.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Duerk, their three daughters, Linda Duerk, Sharon (Jerry) Scheuerman, and Mary Jo (Randy) Ward, three grandchildren, Heather (Javier) Valdez, Adam (Rachael) Ward, and Tom (Britney) Ward, and seven great-grandchildren; Eric Scheuerman, Shay, Maycie, Wyatt, and Harly Ward, and Elley and Colt Ward.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance, and for one hour prior to services at the church. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, March 20, 2017 at St. John Lutheran Church in Defiance, with Rev. Donald Luhring officiating. Burial will follow the service at Riverview Memory Gardens, with Graveside Military Rites accorded by VFW #3360.
