Darrell and I were in MCB-1 together, in 78-79. We became quick friends and he fit right in with my family. When hurricane David hit the Gulf Coast, I was assigned to hurricane relief and was unable to sit with my family in the storm shelter. Darrell took them under his wing, and chased my then 4 year old all over the warehouse, keeping him distracted and comforted in what could have been a terrifying situation. I was always thankful for him, freeing me up to do my duty with much less worry.
We lost track of eachother over time, as often happens in military life. I reconnected with him last winter, and chatted back and forth for some time, catching up and making plans to reunite in the near future. It saddens me to hear of his passing, but I am confident that he is getting his Seabee greens pressed, his boots shined up and his soft cover starched, ready to stand tall, for his acceptance inspection into that big Seabee Batallion in the sky! He was so proud of being a veteran and I was proud and honored to be his shipmate!!! I'm a better person, having had him in my life!! Rest now Seabee, we have the watch!!!
