Wilma Fay Sponsler, age 100 of Defiance, peacefully passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at Kingsbury Place in Defiance, Ohio.
She was born in Defiance on April 6, 1925 to Thomas and Madge (Relyea) Love. Wilma was a 1944 graduate of Defiance High School. On August 27, 1944 she married Virgil T. Sponsler who preceded her in death on June 26, 1997.
Wilma was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church and Defiance County Genealogy Society. She enjoyed volunteering with Coats for Christmas at church, and for the Defiance Co. Board of Elections. Wilma was a dedicated farm wife and mother who took great pride in raising her children. Years ago she played a Hawaiian guitar live on the radio. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing games, flowers, and crocheting, and she loved staying in touch with her neighbors.
Wilma is survived by her loving children, Helen (Dave) Forgey of Logansport, IN, Robert (Peggie) Sponsler of Defiance, Donna (Nino) Martinez of Paulding, and Sandy (Tim) Schackow of Defiance. She also leaves behind 7 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 25 great-great-grandchildren. Wilma will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Tommy and Forest Love, and sister, Thelma Love.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 13, 2026 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm at the funeral home, with Celebrant Deb Miller officiating. Wilma will be laid to rest in Riverview Memory Gardens.
