William H. "Jake" Ames

William H. "Jake" Ames, age 90 of Defiance, passed away on Monday morning, February 16, 2026 at Kingsbury Place in Defiance, Ohio, surrounded by his loved ones.  
  
He was born on May 26, 1935 to the late Rollie and Flossie (Sprow) Ames in Defiance. On February 5, 1955 he married Pauline Yoder, who preceded him in death on October 11, 2011. Jake worked in construction and was also a truck driver. He enjoyed car racing, mowing and traveling in his RV. 
  
Jake is survived by his children, Betty (Victor) Overly of Defiance, William (Linda) Ames of Van Wert, OH, Terry (Michelle) Ames, and Penny (David) Stollsteimer, all of Defiance, 8 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren. 
  
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by great-grandson, Braeden Elwood, and his sister, Eva Ames. 
  
Visitation will be held on Monday, February 23, 2026 from 2:00 to 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance, Ohio. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, February 24th at Hicksville Mennonite Church, with Pastor Jimmy Fry officiating. Jake will be inurned at Sherwood Cemetery at a later date.
