W. Frederick Barnes Obituary

Warren Frederick (“Fred”) Barnes born January 8, 1943, passed away peacefully on Thursday August 22, 2024, at Copper Trace in Westfield, IN after a heavily fought battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Fred was the son of the late Walter and Mary (Warren) Barnes and born in Celina, OH.  He is survived by his sister Jean Sasaki (husband Hank, deceased) of Nashville, TN and his brother, Jim Barnes (wife Janet) of Defiance OH.  He was married to Charlotte Froelich in September 1963, who survives.  He will be greatly missed by his 3 children, Michelle (husband Brian) Wittler of Westfield, IN, Melissa (husband John Swinehart) Barnes of Thorntown, IN and Bill (wife Lisa) Barnes of Austin, TX.  He was a proud grandfather to Bryson and Brennan Wittler and Max and Wyatt Barnes.  His step-grandchildren, Blake (wife Mia) Swinehart, Cole (wife Izibela) Swinehart, and Sari (husband Daniel) Wheeler will also miss his fun spirit.  Fred would have loved to watch his two great-grandchildren, Leo Swinehart and Liam Wheeler grow up.

Fred graduated at the top of his class from Ayersville High School in 1961.  He then attended Michigan State University and earned a BA in Restaurant management in March 1965.  While at MSU, his scholastic achievements allowed him admission into several honorary fraternities.  He was actively involved in Les Gourmet Hotel Association and served as president of Sigma Pi Eta in 1964.  As a Spartan, he was also awarded several grants and scholarships.  Fred’s excellent academic record, both in high school and college, reflected his perseverance, quest for knowledge and impressive work ethic.

After his graduation he returned to Defiance, launching his long career in the restaurant business.  As the owner of Barnes Restaurant/Barney’s diner he was a household name in the Defiance community for over 40 years.  He served up delicious food whether it be in the restaurant dining room, at the diner counter or at catered events.  Some of his famous items were his blueberry pancakes, Barnes burger and beef Manhattan, and one can’t forget the buffet with roast beef, noodles, mashed potatoes and stuffing!  During his years behind the grill, Fred touched the lives of many employees and customers.  His hard work and kind heart did not go unnoticed.

As a business owner, he was a strong supporter of the Defiance community.  Fred was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran church, Defiance Masonic Temple Omega Lodge #564, National Restaurant Association, and Ayersville Athletic Boosters to name a few.  He was also a member of the Toastmasters of Defiance.  He made time to complete the Dale Carnegie Training course, earning the “highest award for achievement”.

Fred’s love for music was evident throughout his lifetime.  He was the cool DJ for the sock hops at Barnes Drive-In back in the late 50’s.  He brought disco fever to downtown Defiance by opening the Silver Fox.  Fred also enjoyed attending all types of music concerts with family and friends.  He was active in cycling and rowing.  He even took up painting in his “retirement” years.
After hanging up his apron and spatula he moved to Angola to enjoy the lake life.  He had to stay busy, so he worked at Satek winery in Fremont, IN.  There he became a special part of another family of hard-working, fun-loving people.  Fred was found working in the vineyard, serving wine behind the tasting counter, or delivering delicious Satek wine to local businesses.  He found the perfect place to spend his last working years.

While at Crooked Lake, Fred continued to serve up good food from his kitchen during gatherings.  He stayed active paddling around the lake and riding his bike.  He also enjoyed being a big brother for the Big Brothers Big Sisters association.

Fred will always be remembered for his love for life and his pleasure in creating events revolving around food, family, and friends.  His enjoyment of music, dancing and having fun was contagious.  His big smile and hearty laugh will forever be missed.
