He was born on December 3, 1925 in Henry County, Ohio. Virgil graduated from Jewell High School in 1944, where he played basketball and baseball and loved to tell the story of him playing in the baseball State Tournament his senior year. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army for two years returning home to marry the love of his life, Betty A. Flory. They wed on November 17, 1946 and had 64 wonderful years together until her passing in 2011. Virgil farmed and worked at Hudson Feeds in Okolona, Ohio. He led a very active life, serving on the school board, township trustee, zoning inspector and held various positions at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where he was a devoted member. He also was a Life Member of VFW Post 3360, Jewell American Legion Post 0635 and Tinora Athletic Boosters. Many people envied his car license plate which read -- TINORA -- .
Virgil and Betty enjoyed many rounds of golf at St Mike's, playing with friends and also competitive leagues. Betty had a hole-in-one and Virgil had two holes-in-one. The enjoyment of golf took them on many day trips and vacations throughout the years. Their passion in life, however, was being involved in all the activities of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren which included school, church and sports. Never missing the opportunity to cheer them on.
