Velia V. Garcia

Velia V. Garcia, age 88 of Defiance, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at ProMedica Defiance Hospital.

Velia was born on March 11, 1935 to the late Jose and Refugia Valenzuela in Rice, Texas. On January 19, 1956 she married Pete G. Garcia who preceded her in death on October 31, 1986.

Velia was beautiful, loving, compassionate and selfless. She loved spending time with family and friends. You could always find her on her favorite couch, watching her American or Spanish soap operas, doing her puzzle books, or watching her game shows. Her love for her family and her cats was never ending.

Velia is survived by her children; Janie (Mike) Burkes of Defiance, Peter (Dawn) Garcia of Holgate, Joe (Miki) Garcia of Defiance, Julie (Steve) Hernandez of Holgate, Mary Cummins of Defiance, and Andy (Jessica) Garcia of Delta, 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren with one on the way, and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her parents, Velia is preceded in death by her husband Pete Garcia, her sister Veda Ayala, her son Peter Garcia, her granddaughter Kathy Garcia, and grandson Joseph Garcia.
  
Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at Schaffer Funeral Home South, Lawson/Roessner Chapel (1753 S. Clinton St.) in Defiance, with a Rosary Service at 2:00 pm. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, June 2, 2023 at Schaffer Funeral Home South, with Fr. Dave Cirata officiating.
