It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Roger Grogg, a beloved retired firefighter, devoted family man, and cherished friend. He departed this life peacefully on October 15, 2024, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Defiance, Ohio, on April 14, 1947, to the late Howard and Luella (Reimund) Grogg. He grew up in Evansport, Ohio, before moving to Defiance in the sixth grade. He married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn “Mert” (Marihugh) Grogg on November 20, 1964.
Roger graduated from Defiance High School in 1965 where he was a three sport standout. He was inducted into the Defiance High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015 as an individual, and in 2018 as a part of the 1962 Football Team. He was recruited by many Ivy League, SEC and Big Ten Teams, and the Naval Academy, ultimately choosing the University of Michigan. However, he was unable to attend due to family health issues. He remained a lifelong die-hard Michigan Wolverines, Detroit Tigers, and Lions fan.
Roger was a member of the Eagles #372 (trustee), Moose #2094, VFW #3360, and the Elks #147. He also belonged to the Defiance Volunteer Fireman and Star Hose. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he served on the council, a counter, and long-time usher. He continued his passion for sports through Maag’s Slow Pitch Softball, Old Timer’s Football, St. Paul’s Church Basketball, and a member of the Eagles Bowling Team. Roger worked as a milkman for Borden’s Dairy. He then joined the Defiance Fire Department in 1970, dedicating 31 years of his life to protecting and serving his neighbors. He retired as a lieutenant. On his days off, he also worked for Schultz Plumbing, Blue Flame, and Ken’s Furniture. He was a jack of all trades for many families in Defiance. After retirement, he worked at Arp’s Hardware. In his spare time, he enjoyed mowing, hunting, fishing, golfing, making flag holders for many veterans in town, and spending time at Coldwater Lake, where countless friends became family.
Roger’s passion for firefighting was matched only by his love for his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Mert; his daughters: Kelly (Sam) Jennings, Tammy (Al) Szabo, and Amy Grogg; adoring grandchildren: Cole (Kara), Zane (Alexis), Hana (Chase), Grace, and Olivia; and three great-children: Cameryn, Cooper, and Navy (due in December). He is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family Pete and Paula Schlosser, and his best kitty Mistletoe.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, sister Leann Schroeder, brother Gene Grogg, and niece Michelle Vergote.
Visitation will take place at Schaffer Funeral Home (529 Jefferson Ave) on Thursday, October 24th, from 2 pm to 8 pm. There will be a Fireman’s Memorial Service beginning at 7 pm. The funeral service will be on Friday, October 25th, at St Paul Lutheran Church (671 Clinton), at 11:00 am with one hour of visitation prior to the service.
The family would like to thank Pastor Dave Brobston, CHP Hospice, Defiance Fire Department, and IAFF Local #918.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to CHP Hospice, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Defiance, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
