Phyllis L. Newton, 93, of Defiance, passed away at home surrounded by her family on June 17, 2019.
She was born on April 28, 1926 to George and Marie (Ackerman) Wasserman in Akron, Ohio. On April 29, 1950, she married George Newton who survives in Defiance.
Phyllis had worked as a Case Worker for NOCAC. She was a member of St Mary Catholic Church and was instrumental in helping to start the St Mary Catholic Food Pantry. Phyllis also served as a Eucharistic Minister as well as being active in other church ministries.
Phyllis is survived by her loving husband, George and their children: Christopher (Karen) Newton, Jeffery (Ezetta) Newton, Laura Coressel, Lawrence (Pat) Newton, Deborah (Wes) Wittenmyer, Eric (Becky) Newton, Mary (Troy) Bowling, Cecilia (Doug) Parsons, Amy (Scott) Galbraith all of Defiance; Theresa (Richard) Clemens of Lima, Ohio, Rebecca (Mark) Hopper of Houston, Texas and daughter-in-law, Sherry Newton of Greenwood, SC. She also leaves behind 31 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, John R Newton, infant son Luke Newton and infant daughter, Agatha Newton as well as her son in law, Ray Coressel.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 20, 2019, 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home, Inc., Defiance, Ohio with a Wake Service at 2 pm. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 21, 2019 at 11:00 am at the St Mary's Catholic Church, with Fr. John Stites officiating.
Burial will take place in the Riverside Cemetery.
