Lynn "Chip" Dunckel Obituary

Lynn R. "Chip" Dunckel, age 92 of Defiance, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday morning, June 1, 2019 at his daughter's home in Delaware, Ohio.    
  
Lynn was born on February 24, 1927 to Grover and Helen (Hamilton) Dunckel in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1952 he married Mary (Southwick) Dunckel, who preceded him in death on April 8, 2010.

Lynn was a faithful member of St. Paul United Methodist Church., and was a past Lay Minister. He graduated from Kent State with a Bachelor's of Science Degree, and earned his Master's Degree in Education Administration from Toledo University. A U.S. Navy Veteran of WW11 he was assigned to the Naval Bureau in Arlington, VA. He was recalled by the Army during the Korean Conflict, and was chosen by his class as their chairperson. During his tour in France he was assigned Payroll Officer, Special Services Officer, Weapons Instructor, and was a Company Commander.

Lynn was a Jr. High Math teacher and coach at Wauseon School, and a Principal with Defiance City Schools at Slocum Elementary. He was the Jr. High Principal,  Assistant Superintendent, and the head of five Elementary Schools and Director of Federal Programs for Public and Parochial Schools. Upon his retirement in 1981, Lynn was appointed Executive Director of The Red Cross of Defiance County, and Executive Director of The United Way of Defiance County.  

He was a member of American Legion Post #117, Defiance Area Foundation, YMCA Board,  and Past President of Defiance City Education Assoc. and Defiance Retired Teachers Assoc. He enjoyed his involvement with of The Northwesternaires Barbershop Chorus, and Defiance Area Antique Car Club. Lynn was elected to Who's Who in American Education in 1973, and was given the title "Editor Emeritas" of Rotary. Lynn was very proud of his children and their accomplishments. He will be sadly missed by his family and many good friends and colleagues. 
  
Lynn is survived by two daughters, Cindy Dunckel, and Lori (Dale) Miller, all of Delaware, Ohio, a son, Scott (Mary) Dunckel of Perrysburg, Ohio, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and his sister, Jill Uzell of Florida, 
 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary L. Dunckel, daughter, Karen Joost, and sister Bonnie Brajdich.  
  
Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 am on Thursday, June 6, 2019 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am at Schaffer Funeral Home, with Rev. Robert L. Fry officiating. Burial will take place at Riverview Memory Gardens, with graveside military rites accorded by  VFW #3360.
