Lester H. Sauer

Lester H. Sauer, 100, of Defiance, passed away on  April 29, 2022 at the Mercy Defiance hospital.  
  
He was born on November 27, 1921 to George and Zelma (Laubenthal) Sauer in Holgate, Ohio. On January 13, 1943, he married Rita Mohr who preceded him on Oct 2,1964.  On June 10, 1965, he married Dorothy Holley who preceded him in 2014.
  
Lester served our country during World War II in the US Army Air Force from 1941 to 1945.  He obtained the rank of Sergeant and conducted Link training for the fighter pilots.  After returning from the services, he worked for Toledo Edison, Brown's Bakery in sales then became a salesman for Ballreich and Cains Potato Chips. 

He had been a resident of Kingsbury Place since 2014.  Lester was a faithful member of St Mary Catholic Church in Defiance.  Other memberships included the Elks, the Eagles, the VFW and was Past President of  the Wally Byam - Air Stream Club, Toledo Unit.  He was also a supporter of the Holy Cross Catholic School.
  
Lester is survived by his sons, Samuel L. (Judy) Sauer, Thomas (Vicki) Sauer, Larry (Mary) Holley all of Defiance,  Tom (Coleen) Holley of Sherwood and daughter, Elizabeth (Rev Kevin) Koening of Naples, Florida.  He also leaves behind several grand children, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren as well as a sister, Nellie Retcher of Holgate, Ohio.
  
He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; a brother, Florian Sauer; daughter, Virginia Ballentine and a  grandson , Joshua Holley.
  
Visitation will be held  at Schaffer Funeral Home, Inc., Defiance, Ohio on Friday, May 6, 2022 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am with a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial following at St. Mary Catholic Church with Fr Randy Giesige officiating.  Burial will be at Riverview Memory Gardens with military honors accorded by Defiance VFW Post #3360.
