Leo James "Jim" Swary, 89, beloved father and grandfather, passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at The Laurels of Defiance.

He was born on May 6, 1928 to Cletus J. Swary and Viola M. (Theisen) Swary. On September 30, 1950 he married Donna M. Meyer in Angola, and she preceded him in death on September 11, 2014. Jim was a graduate of Holgate High School class of 1946. After graduation he worked with his father in construction. He served our country in the U.S. Army in Korea during the Korean War from November 1950 to August 1952. After returning home, he worked at the Defiance Post Office as a mail carrier from 1955 until his retirement in June 1985. He was Secretary of  Defiance Men's Bowling Association for 35 years.

He is survived by his daughter Shelly (Donald) Fry of Bryan, OH, sister Pauline Smith of New Bavaria, OH, brother Michael (Linda) Swary of Jacksonville, FL, grandsons Nicholas (Cathy) Fry of Defiance, Matthew (Amanda) Fry of Palm Coast, FL, great-grandson Hunter of Defiance, and great-granddaughter Lillian of Palm Coast, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Donna, and brother, Paul Swary.

A private burial service will take place at Riverview Memory Gardens in Defiance. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at St. John's Lutheran Church, 655 Wayne Avenue in Defiance, with Pastor Donald L. Luhring officiating, on Saturday, May 5, 2018, which would have been the day before his 90th birthday.
