Lavon Edward Bishop, 92, of Defiance, passed away on Friday, January 2, 2026 at Glenn Park in Defiance, Ohio.
Lavon was born on August 21, 1933 to Harold and Mildred (McDonald) Bishop in Miami County, Ohio. He married Alice Miller on July 5, 1953 at the Church of the Brethren, Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Lavon was a member of the Poplar Ridge Church of the Brethren in Defiance. He was a Sunday School teacher and superintendent, served as a deacon, served as treasurer of the church cemetery for over 50 years, and assisted with many personal services to families, church families and community friends and neighbors. He enjoyed serving as videographer for Alice and her friends who played music. Also he enjoyed gardening and helping his wife tend her flowers. He will be missed. Lavon served in the Army from 1953-1955 then serving six years in the standby Reserves and was honorably discharged as a Corporal. He retired from Dana Corp. in 1992 with 40 years of service.
Lavon is survived by his children, Michael Bishop of Defiance, David Bishop of Ft. Wayne, IN, Patrick (Patty) Bishop of Defiance, James (Linda) Bishop of Napoleon, and Cheryl (Alex) Brandt of Defiance, nine grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and twenty step-great- grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Alice, a granddaughter, a great-grandson, sister Dorthea Thomas, and brother Gary Bishop.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 9, 2026 from 9:00 am - 11:00 am at Poplar Ridge Church of the Brethren in Defiance, where funeral services will follow at 11:00 am with Rev. Benjamin Polzin officiating. Lavon will be laid to rest in Poplar Ridge Cemetery. Schaffer Funeral Home is honored to assist the family with arrangements.
