Larry Michael Mekus

Larry Michael Mekus, 72, of Venice, Florida went to his eternal rest peacefully at home on January 12, 2025. Larry was born on April 28, 1952 in Defiance, Ohio. He married his high school sweetheart, Susan (Zipfel) Mekus on May 15, 1970. 

Larry started working at General Motors, Defiance, Ohio on December 7, 1970, retiring in 2001 as a journeyman electrician. During his time at G.M., he also taught maintenance health and safety classes where he developed a high voltage training class that was used throughout General Motors all while establishing camaraderie and unforgettable friendships.

Beyond his working career, Larry was a life-long, avid golfer. He loved boating and teaching his grandchildren water sports. Many other interests kept Larry’s life very active including the Ohio State Buckeyes, riding his Harley, woodworking, and construction. His first project began with building a family home which provided many great memories for his wife, daughters and grandchildren.

Larry is survived by his loving wife, Susan (Zipfel) Mekus, daughters, Jennifer (Todd) Moser and Penny (Brian) Denomme, six grandchildren; Megan (Keith) Eickhoff, Treg (Hannah) Moser, Garett Moser, Madison (Reinaldo) Pascual, Maxim Denomme and Grace (Jackson) Vyletel, as well as four great-grandchildren; Benjamin, Norah, Grant, and Patrick Eickhoff, and baby Moser due soon. Larry also leaves behind three brothers; Daniel, Randy and Greg Mekus and sister, Diana Held.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Justin and Doris (Hashbarger) Mekus and his baby brother, Garry Mekus. 

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2025 from 3:00 pm to 7:30 pm, and Rosary in honor of Larry will be said at 7:30 at Schaffer Funeral Home South, 1753 S. Clinton Street, Defiance, Ohio. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025 at 11:00 am at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 5480 Moser Rd, Defiance, Ohio with Fr. John Stites officiating. Larry will be laid to rest at the St. Michael’s Cemetery.
