John "Mike" Simon

John M. "Mike" Simon, age 76 of Defiance, peacefully passed away at home surrounded by his family on Monday morning, January 16, 2023.   
  
He was born on March 17, 1946 to the late Walter and Helen (Patterson) Simon in Toledo, Ohio. Mike was a 1964 graduate of Oakwood High School. On November 26, 1964 he married Sandy (Seither) Simon of Defiance. 
  
Mike was a faithful member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Defiance Elks Lodge #147, Cushman Club of America, and was one of the founding members of Maumee Valley Car Club. He was a dedicated Police Officer and Investigator for the City of Defiance for over 25 years until his retirement in 2000. In his youth he was a Boy Scout and as an adult was a Commissioner. He proudly earned the Silver Beaver and St. George Awards in Boy Scouts. Mike had a real talent and passion for woodworking, and he loved attending Cushman activities. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, and he loved his cats..."Chew-Man-Chew" and "Sammie". Many will remember Mike for his kind and compassionate nature and his quick sense of humor. He will be sadly missed by his family, colleagues, and many good friends.
 
Mike is survived by his loving wife Sandy of Defiance, his daughter, Jennifer (Glenn) Giesey of Rolla, MO, and his son, Joshua (Paula) Simon of Sylvania, OH. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren; Philip (Katherine Rickert) Giesey of Austin, TX, Abby, Noah, John, Lydia and J.J. Giesey of Missouri, Julia Giesey of Tennessee, and Jacob, Benjamin and Katherine Simon of Sylvania, Ohio, his sisters, Mary Anne Hauenstein of Arizona, and Jane Dewitt of Indiana. 
  
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Helen Simon, his sister, Ida Hammann, his brother, Thad Simon, brothers-in-law, Denver Hammann, John Hauenstein, and Leonard Dewitt, and sister-in-law, Sandra Simon
  
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 20, 2023 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Defiance, Ohio, with Fr. Jason D'Souza and Fr. John Stites officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
