John Richard Stevenson, 88, of Powell, Ohio, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, December 2, 2024.
He was born on March 7, 1936 in Adrian, Michigan to the late Leland and Evelyn (Wheaton) Stevenson. John proudly graduated from The University of Michigan with a degree in Business Administration. He served in the military with the Army Security Agency. In 1967 he married Nancy Lewandowski who survives.
John worked for the Social Security Administration for over 30 years retiring in 1995 as District Manager in Defiance. As part of his duties, he was coordinator of the refugee resettlement camp in Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania at the end of the Vietnam War. He was later assigned to the US State Department in Rome, Italy from 1978 to 1980 where he was responsible for administrating all US federal benefits in Italy, Spain and Portugal.
Based on his many different volunteer activities for over 35 years, he was selected to carry the torch for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
His hobbies included spending time with family, traveling, genealogy, Michigan football and teaching people all kinds of facts. John will be remembered for his kindness, intelligence and his unique sense of humor.
John is survived by the love of his life wife Nancy Stevenson, his daughters Debbie (Tolly Hanna) of Dublin, OH and Vicki (Garry Mitchell) of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by his 3 grandchildren - Joshua, Nathan and Allison Hanna.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Stevenson.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 6, 2024 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home South, Lawson/Roessner Chapel (1753 S. Clinton Street) in Defiance. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at First Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Ann Wasson officiating. One hour of visitation will be held at the church prior to services. John will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery.
