James E. Miller

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, James Edward Miller, 85 of Defiance. He passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at his home in Defiance.   

He was born on September 7, 1937 to Edward and Irene Miller (Etchen) in Jewell, Ohio. On June 6, 1964 he married his forever love and dancing partner, Linda A. Hasselschwert who preceded him in death. 

Jim was a devoted husband, a loving father, a cherished grandfather, and known for his servant heart and work ethic. He was a faithful and active member of St John’s Catholic Church along with The Elks Lodge, Eagles and Knights of Columbus. He previously worked at Dinner Bell Foods and The State Bank in Defiance. Jim loved polka dancing, music, playing cards, baseball and his passion was helping others. His greatest love was his wife, Linda of 54 years and spending time with family and friends. 

Jim will be profoundly missed by his daughters, Lisa (Thomas) Shannon of Eden Prairie, MN, Jennifer (Timothy) Holman of Dexter, Michigan, Patti (Corey) Giangrande of Grand Rapids, Michigan and son Timothy (Brandy) Miller of Defiance.  He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren: Kyle (Lauren), Alex (Lexie), Luke (Makenzie), Wesley (Micah), Alexis, Abigail, Jaylie, Emma, Rylee, Laney, Alivia, Gavin, and Bennett.  Also, two great-grandchildren, Eleanor and Miles. 

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Miller, his mother and stepfather, Irene and Gerald Hutchins, his loving wife Linda Miller, and his brother Ronald Miller.

Visitations will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023 from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at St John’s Catholic Church, with Fr. David Cirata officiating.
