Hortencia "Tencha" (Torres) Sierra, age 85 of Defiance, passed away on Saturday, March 5, 2022 surrounded by her children and loving family.
She was born on September 7, 1936 in Agujita Coahuila Mexico to Pedro and Enedina Torres. She married Juan Veloquio Sierra in 1954, who preceded her in death on December 18, 1994. She remarried Cresencio Mendez on September 7, 2006 who preceded her in death on May 5, 2007.
A loving and nurturing mother of eight children she loved cooking for her family, weddings and other special events. For years she along with other women of the Latin American Club would design and create a float for the annual Halloween Parade. It was one of her favorite creative projects. As children we would watch excitedly as the float would take form and become a beautiful colorful float. She served as the secretary of the LAC for many years. She attended St. John's Catholic Church.
She will be remembered most for spending time with her family and filling the room with laughter. She loved playing Loteria (Mexican Bingo) with her family late into the night, as she did with her family in her childhood in Mexico.
Left to cherish her memory are her children; Jesus "Jesse" (Christy) Sierra, Abelardo "Lalo" (Pam) Sierra, Juan "Buggs" (Joan) Sierra, Araceli "Sally" Sierra, Hortencia "Madi" Sierra, Jaime Sierra, Concepcion "Connie" (Rachael) Sierra, Ana "Annie" (Joe) Sierra Knapp, 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2022 from 2:00 to 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance, with a Rosary Service at 7:30 pm.
