George E. Newton, 94, of Defiance, passed away at CHP Defiance Area Hospice Center surrounded by his family on Monday, November 11, 2024.
George was born in Defiance on November 28, 1929, the son of Earl and Blanche (Myers) Newton. On April 29, 1950 he married Phyllis Wasserman. She preceded him in death on June 17, 2019. A graduate of Defiance College, George was a Human Resources Manager for Dinner Bell Foods, Precision Products, Nemco, and Diehl Inc, in a business career spanning decades.
A member of St. Mary Catholic Church, George was ordained a permanent Deacon in May, 1975. Through the subsequent 49 years until this day his passion was participating in all the activities associated with the Diaconate, among them RCIA, baptisms and weddings. He also helped manage the St. Mary's Food Pantry. Along with serving as a Deacon, the roles most important to him in life were being a husband and father. George was an avid tennis player and will be missed by his tennis buddies.
George is survived by his children: Christopher (Karen) Newton, Jeffery (Ezetta) Newton, Laura Coressel, Lawrence (Pat) Newton, Deborah Wittenmyer, Eric (Becky) Newton, Mary (Troy) Bowling, Cecilia (Doug) Parsons, and Amy (Scott) Galbraith, all of Defiance, Theresa (Richard) Clemens of Portage, Ohio, and Rebecca (Mark) Hopper of Houston, TX. He is also survived by daughter-in-law Sherry Newton of Greenwood, SC, 31 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife Phyllis and his parents, George was preceded in death by a son John R. Newton, infant son Luke, infant daughter Agatha, and sons-in-law Ray Coressel and Wes Wittenmyer.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024 from 2:00 to 8:00 pm.at Schaffer Funeral Home South, Lawson/Roessner Chapel (1753 S. Clinton Street) in Defiance. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, November 18, 2024 at St. Mary Catholic Church, with Fr. David Cirata officiating. George will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery.
