Gene Owens

Carl "Gene" Owens, age 79 of Defiance, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 13, 2022 at The Meadows of Kalida.  
  
He was born on September 7, 1942 to the late James and Inis Owens in Harman, Virginia. On January 6, 1961  he married his soul mate Sue (Bowman) Owens, who preceded him in death on October 17, 2021. 

Gene was a member of Restoration Tabernacle Church, and UAW Local #211. He worked for 28 years at General Motors in Defiance until his retirement in 1994. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to fish and hunt. He enjoyed working with metals, making crafts, knives and jewelry. Gene was a real family man and mentored many young men like they were his son since he never had a son of his own. He was the ultimate caregiver for his wife and gave her hope, love, and peace during her extended illness.
  
Gene will be sadly missed by three daughters; Jackie (Billy Burt) Owens of Defiance, Betty L. (Daniel) Wagner of Columbus Grove, OH, and Shirley (Thomas) Hart of Ft. Wayne, IN, 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. 
  
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Sue Owens, and his sister, Irene.
  
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at Schaffer Funeral Home, with Rev. Janet Strickland officiating. Burial will follow the service at Ayersville Cemetery.
