Doris M. Mekus, age 92 of Defiance, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 13, 2024 at Glenn Park of Defiance.
She was born on January 11, 1932 to the late Wilbert "Bill" and Mildred (Yetter) Hashbarger in Henry County, Ohio. Doris was a 1949 graduate of Holgate High School. On May 13, 1950 she married Justin "Jud" Mekus, who preceded her in death in 1986.
Doris was a faithful was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, was a Eucharistic Minister, treasurer of St. Mike's Home and School Association, and past president of Altar & Rosary Society. She was an Auxiliary Member of Moose #2094, Eagles #2394 and New Bavaria #8847. She treasured her time spent at home with her children during their younger years. Doris enjoyed cake decorating, candy, camping, and casinos. She was an avid golfer and has truly missed playing the game. Doris loved to visit Florida during the winter months. She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother who treasured her time spent with her family.
Doris is survived by her children, Daniel (Diana) Mekus of Defiance, Larry (Sue) Mekus of Venice, FL, Randy (Gwen) Mekus of Defiance, Gregory Mekus of Hamilton, IN, and Diana (Jeff) Held of Palmetto, FL. She also leaves behind 14 grandchildren; Danny Mekus, Michelle Boudreaux, Theresa Velazquez, Kim Mekus, Steven Mekus, Jennifer Moser, Penny Denomme, Drew Mekus, Colby Mekus, Ashley Hurst, Justin Mekus, Brittany Donaldson, Rebecca Mack and Kyle Donaldson, 33 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Justin Mekus, son Garry Mekus, sister Erma Deters, brother Bob Hashbarger, and her Godchild Doug Hashbarger.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2024 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home South, Lawson/Roessner Chapel (1753 S. Clinton Street) in Defiance, and from 9:00 am to 10:00 am before the service on Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, October 18, 2024 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, with Fr. Melwin D'Souza officiating. Doris will be laid to rest at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery.
