Donald J. Hubert

Donald J. Hubert, age 71 of Defiance, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday evening, September 15, 2022 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.   
  
He was born on June 16, 1951 to the late Donald and Ruth (Thrasher) Hubert in Van Wert, Ohio.  Don proudly served our country in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1972, and in the U.S. Marine Corp. from 1973 to 1975 during the Vietnam War. He went to Vietnam from Germany on December 6, 1971 and received several Honorary Medals. On February 14, 2002 he married Janis (Hohenberger) Hubert, who survives. 
  
Don was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church.  He was a member of VFW #3360, American Legion #117, and Defiance AmVets #1991. He graduated from Napoleon High School in 1969 and attended Purdue College in Ft. Wayne, IN.  He graduated from Azusa Community College in California, where he received his Welding Certificate and CAADAC License. Don worked as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor at Phoenix House in Santa Ana, California, and also at Five County Drug and Alcohol in Defiance. He worked at Werlor's Waste Control for several years until his retirement. In his leisure time he enjoyed gardening, landscaping and fishing. Don was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and he treasured his time spent with his family and grandchildren, and his favorite dog "Jasmine".
 
Don will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Janis Hubert of Defiance, his daughters; Donel Gillespie of Raleigh, NC, Dara Hubert of Syracuse, NY, Tammi (Anthony) Arrowood of Napoleon, OH, Diana Holmes of Defiance, and Rebecca (Scott) Wolfrum of Defiance, and his son, Jay (Monica) Hubert of Albuquerque, NM. He also leaves behind 20 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, his sisters; Ruth D. (Larry) Hill, Marcille (Mike) Jackson, True I. (Bob) Reeder, Kay M. (the late Jim) Rickers, Mary Lou (Russ) Zinzer, Dawn D. (the late Pete) Garcia, and Joy (Gary) Green, and his brothers; Michael R. (Sharon) Hubert, and Faron R. (Donna) Hubert. 
  
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Carol Ann Hubert, Jacqueline Rose Hubert, Tamara Jo Hubert, and his brother, David Hubert.
  
Friends may visit the family on Friday, September 23, 2022 from 1:00 to 3:00 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance, Ohio. A Memorial Service will follow at 3:00 at the funeral home, with Pastor Mick Sobieck officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by VFW #3360.
