Dolena Bergman Obituary

Dolena A. Bergman, 86 of Defiance, passed away on Friday, July 22, 2022 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.  
  
She was born on March 17, 1936 to William and Christina Ball in Defiance, Ohio. On February 1, 1953 she married Carroll R. Bergman who preceded her in death on April 8, 2016.

Dolena retired from the floral business after owning and operating Wichmann Florist and Bridal. She was a lifetime member of the Defiance VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She also worked by her husband's side directing the Skylark Youth Center in Defiance for many years. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where she volunteered in the Stephen Ministries, the Altar Guild, Ladies Aid, Telecare, Rest Home Bulletin Ministry, and taught Sunday School. She also enjoyed attending various Bible Study groups.

Dolena loved designing and was always volunteering to help decorate the church and many of the special events that took place. Many a day you could see her outside her home tending to her many flower and vegetable gardens. Her #1 love of her life was her family, they were her pride and joy! Her 4 children, 15 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren made her feel loved and appreciated. Callie, her calico cat, was her constant companion and devoted friend bringing great joy to her life.

Dolena is survived by her daughters, Carol (Dave) Mangas of Defiance, and Patricia (Wesley) McFarland of Bloomington, IN, her sons, Michael (Donna) Bergman of Hope Mills, NC, and Mark (Sondra) Bergman of Defiance, 15 grandchildren; Andrew (Paige) Mangas, Dave (Rebecca) Mangas, Cindy Mangas, Sarah (Terry) Ricker, Jeffery (Lindsay) Mangas, Michael Jr. (Pikul) Bergman, Jason (Lori) Bergman, Jeremy (Shawn) Bergman, Joshua (Carmen) Bergman, Donovan Bergman, Kristen (Matt) Hagen, Kelsey McFarland, Matt McFarland, Stephany (Kyle) Blackston and Christopher (Katia Gorshof) Bergman, and 20 great-grandchildren; Lyla, Luke, Autumn, Emanuel, Zuri, Blake, Addison, Alivia, Nathanael, Michael III, Athena, Annmarie, Jason Jr., Ryanne, Gabriel, Ailani, Joshua Jr., Isaiah, Evan and Vanessa. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Elaine Ball of Defiance, widow of Martin, Ardis Bergman of Defiance, widow of Eugene, Roberta (Jim) Slight and Diana Bergman of Wabash, IN, widow of Paul, and brothers-in-law, Gary Bergman and Fred (Rita) Bergman of Defiance, Larry (Diann) Bergman of Sherwood, OH.

In addition to her parents and husband, Dolena was preceded in death by 6 brothers; Roy, Lawrence, Torrence, Nelson (Marjorie), Junior, and Martin Ball, and three sisters; Mary Ball, Sylvia (Dean) Young, and Goldie (William) Bennett. Dolena was the youngest of 10 siblings. Also preceding her in death was one sister-in-law Mary Bergman, widower of Gary, and brothers-in-law, Eugene Bergman and Paul Michael Bergman.
  
The family will receive friends on Monday, August 1, 2022 from 10:00 to 11:00 am at St. John Lutheran Church in Defiance. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am at the church, with Rev. Kurt Mews officiating. Burial will follow the funeral dinner at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Sherwood, Ohio. Schaffer Funeral Home was honored to assist the family with arrangements.
