Carl J. Westhoven, age 81, of Toledo, formerly of Defiance, passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2025 at his residence in Toledo, Ohio.
He was born on January 20, 1944 to Bernard and Mary (Long) Westhoven in Liberty Center, Ohio. Carl was a graduate of Liberty Center High School and proudly served in the U.S. Air Force from 1961 to 1965. On October 5, 1968 he married Joyce Steinbrener, who preceded him in death on June 5, 2022.
Carl was a former officer at Defiance AmVets, and a former member of Defiance Eagles #372, Elks Lodge #147, AmVets #1991 and VFW #3360. He worked for 38 years at General Motors until his retirement in 2009. Carl was a very simple man. He enjoyed playing cards - especially euchre, riding his motorcycle, and going to casinos. He was dedicated to his family and loved to attend his children's and grandchildren's sporting events. He has courageously battled bladder cancer since 2014.
Carl is survived by his loving children, Eric Westhoven of Toledo, OH and Sara Schindler of Defiance, his grandchildren, Evelyn, Gabrielle, Andrew and Madeline Westhoven, Isaac, Mikala and Ally Schindler, his sisters, Jane Ostlund, Rosemarie Dunlop, Mary Stephey and Joann Westhoven, and his brothers, Vincent Westhoven, E. George Westhoven and Bernard Westhoven.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Joyce Westhoven, brothers, Thomas and Peter Westhoven, and sisters, Janis Westhoven-Kern and Claire Westhoven.
Visitation will be held on Monday, February 10, 2025 from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home South, Lawson/Roessner Chapel (1753 S. Clinton Street) in Defiance. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, February 11th at the funeral home, with Sandy Herman officiating. Carl will be laid to rest in Riverview Memory Gardens Mausoleum with Military Honors.
