Bernard L. "Bernie" Shock, age 91 of Defiance, passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2025 at VanCrest of Holgate.
He was born in Defiance, Ohio on August 4th, 1933 to the late Henry and Bertha (Rettig) Shock, the youngest of eight children. Bernie graduated from Jewell High School in 1951. He was a 1955 graduate of Defiance College and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. He played basketball and baseball in high school and college. Bernie was an avid sports fan, especially high school sports. He enjoyed playing golf and fishing.
Bernie worked for the Jewell Grain Company during the time he attended Defiance College. He worked for the Defiance City Tax Office and moved on with the company and installed the tax system. Bernie helped to setup the tax system in about 100 cities and villages in the state of Ohio. He worked as an insurance adjuster for Western Adjustment Company, and also for Deatrick-Horman-Galliers Inc. agency for 24 years before retiring.
He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Tinora and Defiance Athletic Clubs, Defiance VFW Post #3360, and Defiance Elks Club #147.
On April 14th, 1972 he married Jane Kaye (Wellman) Shock who passed away on November 7th, 2020. Bernie and Jane had one wonderful, fantastic and delightful son, Steve (Leslie) Shock of Burlington, NC. He also leaves behind his grandson, Lucas Savchak
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth Shock, Ethel Panning, Lois Oberhaus and Mildred Shock, and his brothers, Howard (Rita) Shock, Harold Shock, and Carl (Eileen) Shock.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at Trinity United Methodist Church, with Pastor Nico Kinner officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am prior to the service. A luncheon will follow at the church. Schaffer Funeral Home was honored to assist the family with arrangements.
