Anselmo "Sam" Gomez, age 76, of Defiance, peacefully passed away on Sunday morning, February 12, 2023 at The Laurels of Defiance surrounded by his family.
He was born on September 10, 1946 to the late Salvador Gomez and Paula Aguilar in Los Fresnos, Texas. On December 31, 1970 he married Marianna Garcia who survives. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army from 1967-1969 during the Vietnam War where he was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Anselmo was a member of Defiance VFW Post #3360, UAW #211 and DAV. He worked at General Motors Powertrain for 30 years until his retirement in 1999. Anselmo loved listening to Spanish and Christian music, going to Spanish dances, spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren and grand-dogs Honey, Buddy and Bear.
Anselmo is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Mary Gomez of Defiance, and his children, Patricia Hinojosa and Michael (Veronica) Gomez, all of Defiance. He also leaves behind six grandchildren; Alex (Macey) Hinojosa, Andy Hinojosa, Ariana Hinojosa, Michael (Riley) Gomez Jr., Gavino Gomez and Abel Gomez, one great-grandson, Mateo Hinojosa, and his sisters, Rosa Trevino and Maria Luisa Gomez, both of Brownsville, TX.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Gregoria Gomez.
