Obituary

Rev. Wyn Bryan Maxey, 90, of New Haven, Indiana, formerly of Defiance, OH and Weston, OH, passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2014, at his home.

Bryan, the last of nine children, was born on April 16, 1924, in Portland, Oregon to Robert Tibbs Sr. and Maude (Bryan) Maxey. He was the son of a minister who served for 50 years in the Christian church.

He attended grade school in Circleville, Ohio, and graduated from high school in Truman, Minnesota in 1942. He is a World War II veteran and served in the United States Army.

Bryan married Kathryn Mae Cheney on April 7, 1946, and she preceded him in death on November 15, 2002. Bryan graduated from Cincinnati Bible Seminary in 1948 and from Milligan College in 1952.

Bryan served as the minister for the Jamestown Christian Church in Kentucky from 1948-1957 where he was ordained in 1948.  He also served as minister at the Weston Church of Christ from 1957-1967, and the Defiance Church of Christ from 1967-1986. Following his retirement, he served as an interim minister in fifteen churches throughout Ohio and Indiana. Bryan also served as a volunteer chaplain of the Defiance County Caring Way Hospice. He delivered his first sermon while in high school in 1942 and has since ministered for 66 years.

Bryan served on the board at Great Lakes Bible College and was also a board member for Lake James Christian Assembly in Angola, Indiana.

Bryan married Dorothy Louise Ernst on November 28, 2004 and she survives along with four sons:  Robert (Jane), Louisville, KY; John (Judy), Bowling Green, OH; David (Joyce), Defiance, OH; and Stephen (Deborah), Defiance, OH. A daughter, Mary Kathryn, died in infancy. There are eight grandchildren: Kirk (Cara), Rob, Tim, Chip, Kara, Natalie, Will, and Kyle, as well as three great-grandchildren: Mackenzie, Koby, and Brody.   He is also survived by Dorothy's daughters, Judy, Jo, Rusty, and their families. He is preceded in death by his mother and father and eight siblings.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Schaffer Funeral Home, 529 Jefferson Avenue, Defiance, OH, with visitation to be held from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 12, at the funeral home. A Celebration of Life will take place on Tuesday, May 13, at 11:00 a.m. at the Defiance Christian Church, 955 Standley Road, Defiance, with visitation from 10:00-11:00 a.m at the church.

The family suggests memorials be made to The Caring Way Hospice of Defiance.
