William "Bill" Stanton Kallay Jr, 91, of Defiance, passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at Twin Rivers Care and Rehabilitation Center in Defiance, Ohio.
Bill was born on February 27, 1924 in Willoughby, Ohio to William and Susan (Greiger) Kallay. He graduated from Painesville, Ohio High School and joined the United States Navy during World War II, where he served for four years. After the war he graduated from Ohio State University with a major in Agricultural Engineering.
In 1950, Bill married Grace Padrutt and began working for Oliver Farm Machinery in Pennsylvania as a Territory Manager. In 1955, he was transferred to Defiance, Ohio, and retired after 31 years. Bill was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Defiance, where he served as a trustee and on many other committees. He also started a Cub Scout troop at the church. He was a member of Tuendawie Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and the Poets.
Together, Bill and Grace raised two children. William, who died in 2000, and their daughter Laura, who is married to Gregory Brice. They reside in Denver, Colorado. The Kallay grandchildren all live in California. Destiny (Brian) Estabrook, Westley (Chelsea) Kallay, Steven Kallay and Andrew Kallay. They also have one great grandson, Kain Kallay, son of Westley and Chelsea. Their oldest grandson, Adam Kallay, died in 2007. Over the years their grandchildren spent many summer vacations at their country home in Defiance, swimming, fishing, driving their grandpa's tractor and enjoying grandma's cooking.
Bill was an avid gardener who was always eager to share his produce with others. After retirement, he and his wife pursued a lifelong interest in antiques by starting an antique business, doing antique shows and making many new friends in the antique business. Their most recent move was from their home of 42 years in the country to a condominium in Brunersburg, where Bill enjoyed spending time with friends and the beautiful trees of Brunersburg.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, Ohio. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am at the funeral home, with Pastor Joe Payne, officiating. Burial will take place at McCauley Cemetery in Tiffin Township at 1:30 pm.
