William A. "Bill" Hostettler, age 83 of Defiance, passed away surrounded by his loved ones on Thursday, June 18, 2026 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.
He was born in Defiance, Ohio on May 24, 1943 to the late Daniel and Marie (Wisda) Hostettler. Bill was a 1961 graduate of Defiance High School and proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1962-1965. On January 15, 1972 he married Brenda Emery who survives.
Bill was a faithful member of St. John's Catholic Church and Defiance Eagles #372, and was a former member of Elks Lodge #147. He worked as a salesman at Brown's Bakery for over 32 years until his retirement. He was a diehard Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns fan. Bill and Brenda enjoyed camping, and for several years they hosted in State Park Campgrounds. He will be greatly missed by his family and many good friends.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Brenda Hostettler of Defiance, his son Stephen Hostettler of Defiance, sisters Joann Dietrick of Defiance and Barbara Teats of Montpelier, brothers, Michael and Mark Hostettler, both of Defiance, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Pamela Marshall, and brothers, David and John Hostettler.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2026 from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:00 am on Friday, June 26th at St. John Catholic Church with Fr. John Stites officiating, followed by military honors conducted by VFW #3360. Bill will be laid to rest at a later date in Riverside Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to CHP Defiance Hospice, St. John Catholic Church, or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
