Obituary

Walter W. Westrick, age 98, of Waterville, Ohio, formerly of Defiance, peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday, August 19, 2025 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center. Walter was born in Marion Township on March 22, 1927 to Walter and Ellenora (Laubenthal) Westrick.  He was a 1945 graduate of Holgate High School. On January 15, 1951 he married Elnora (Bunke) Westrick, who preceded him in death on October 17, 2022. He proudly served in the U.S. Coast Guard from April, 1945 to May, 1946. Walter was a faithful member of St. John Catholic Church. He worked as an Electrician and was a member of IBEW Local 8 for 75 years, and a former member of Defiance American Legion. Walter enjoyed fishing, gardening, woodworking, doing puzzles, bike riding, walking, wine making, and polka dancing. He loved helping family and friends with their DIY projects. Walter enjoyed going to the Labor Day parades and spending time with his family and friends. He was a dedicated and loving husband, father and grandfather, and will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Walter is survived by his loving children, Gary (Helen) Westrick of Maumee, OH, Cheryl Doyle of Napoleon, OH, and Karen (Shawn) Moore of Ada, OH. He also leaves behind 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren, and his sister, Marian Kingsley of Marion, OH. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son, David Westrick, great-great grandson, Jace Bischoff, and his siblings; Lucille Brantl, Dorothy Widman, Charlotte Thompson, Cyril Westrick, Marie Thompson, Martha Dummett, Teresa Vasvery, Robert Westrick, Elizabeth Duda, Marvin Westrick and Patricia Maag. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at St. John Catholic Church in Defiance. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 11:00 am at the church, with Fr. Kevin McGraw officiating. Walter will be laid to rest in Riverview Memory Gardens Mausoleum.

Schaffer Funeral Home was honored to assist the family with arrangements. Memorials are suggested to St. John Catholic Church, CHP Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
