Obituary

Walter F. Spangler, 84, Defiance, passed away Friday, March 21, 2014, at the CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center. He was born in Defiance on April 22, 1929, the son of the late Philip and Rose (Carroll) Spangler. Walter worked as cafeteria supervisor at GM Central Foundry, retiring in 1986. He was a Korean War Army veteran and a 1947 graduate of Defiance High School. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, enjoyed golfing with his twin brother, John, jigsaw puzzles and was a Cincinnati Reds fan. On October 5, 1963, Walter married Janice (Schlembach) Spangler, who survives. Walter will be sadly missed by his wife, Janice; daughter, Ellen Spangler of Defiance; sons, William Spangler of Defiance, Gerald (Paige) Spangler of Kettering, Ohio and David (Margaret) Spangler of Holgate, Ohio; sisters, Madonna Gilgenbach of Vancrest Holgate and Alberta Vogel of Defiance; grandchildren, Anne-Marie (Nathan) Miller, Michael Spangler, Zachary Spangler, Nathan Spangler, Nicholas Spangler, Correena Spangler, Kathryne Spangler, Cuyler Spangler, Kailyn Spangler and great grandchildren, Brooklyn Miller, Gavin Miller and Addison Miller. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, John, two brothers who died in infancy, Wilferd and James; brothers-in-law, Clarence Gilgenbach, Wilbur Vogel and Richard Schlembach; a niece, Ann Stone and two nephews, Frederick Gilgenbach and Daniel Schlembach. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Father Randy Giesige officiating. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Monday, March 24, at the Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home. There will be a scripture service 7:30 p.m. Monday. Visitation will also be 10-1030 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Riverview Memory Gardens Cemetery where VFW Post #3360 will conduct military rites. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center or St. Mary's Food Pantry.
