Walter Batoha, 94, of Defiance, passed away on Monday, September 21, 2015 at Glenn Park of Defiance.
He was born on March 26, 1921 to Frank and Frances (Valasek) Batoha in Moravia, Czechoslovakia. On May 16, 1942 he married Rita (Kunesh) Batoha, who proceeded him in death on March 22, 2009. Walter worked as a route salesman for Maumee Valley Vending Company.
Walter was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Defiance. He is a WWII Veteran from 1942 to 1945. Walter fought in the Northern African Campaign, and the Battle of the Bulge Operation in Germany under General Patten's Unit, where he was wounded. He was a 4th Degree Member of K of C, Czech Society of America, VFW, American Legion, DAV, Czech Dancers Polka Club, Inc., and the American Czech & Slovak Dance Club. Walter was a Boy Scout Leader and mentor. He was kind, humble, gentle, and always had a smile on his face.
Walter is survived by his sons, Daniel (Nadine) Batoha of Hodges, South Carolina, and James (Shelley) Batoha of Defiance, sister, Frances Welsh of Centerville, Ohio, grandson, Eric Aschemeier, great-granddaughter, Brittani Aschemeier, and great-grandson, Tanner Aschemeier.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Frances Batoha, wife, Rita R. Batoha, brother, Joseph Batoha, daughter, Mary Lee Aschemeier, and grandson, Jay Aschemeier.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, and from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, September 25, 2015, at Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, with a Vigil Service at 2:00 pm. A Rite of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2015, at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Defiance, with Father Randy Giesige officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery with Military Honors by VFW.
