Virginia Alice Lewis, 91, of Defiance, Ohio passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at Vancrest Care Center in Holgate, Ohio.
She was born July 25, 1923 in Sidney, Ohio the daughter of the late Clarence and Blanche (Thomas) Short.
On October 12, 1946, she married Herbert C. Lewis at First Methodist Church, Sidney, Ohio by Dr. Richard E. Scully. Virginia and Herbert were fortunate to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary together.
Virginia graduated from Sidney High School and worked for the former Citizens National Bank in Sidney. She became a homemaker after her children were born and truly enjoyed making her house a "Home". She loved beautiful dishes, decorating and cooking, along with crocheting, word search puzzles and traveling.
She enjoyed her volunteer work with the Defiance YMCA and Defiance Regional Medical Center Thrift Shop. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Virginia instilled in her family flexibility and the ability to make new friends and keep the old. She moved numerous time in her life across the country with her husband's career with G.C. Murphy Company. She lived in Ohio, Indiana, Texas, Illinois, and Florida.
Virginia is survived by her son, Gary W. (Barbara) Lewis, Unionville, Indiana and her daughter, Debra A. (Denny) Meyer, Hamler, Ohio.
She is also survived by four grandchildren, Brian (Mary) Lewis and Kevin Lewis, Greenwood, Indiana, Nicole (Kirt) Wells, Napoleon, Ohio and Ajay Meyer, Hamler, Ohio.
She very much enjoyed her six great-grandchildren, Issac, Will & Ava Lewis and Kalli and Kenlee Wells, and Emerson Meyer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert C. Lewis, her parents, her brother James Short and her sister, Isabelle (Carl) Bell.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Tuesday, May 5th, 2015 at Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 6th, 2015 at 10:00 am at the Schaffer Funeral Home with Rev. Tamara Wood officiating.
Burial will take place at Graceland Cemetery in Sidney, Ohio, at 1:00 pm following the services.
Memorials in honor of Virginia may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children/Cincinnati Murat Shrine, at 510 N. New Jersey St, Indianapolis, IN 43204 and/or St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Hamler, OH.
