Veronica  Matvey, 97, of Defiance, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center in Defiance.

She was born on March 19, 1919 to Peter and Maria (Lisczinski) Gulas in Czechoslovakia. On June 19, 1943 she married Michael Matvey, who preceded her in death in 2001.
She was a member of  St. Isidore Marysdale Catholic Church, and The Czech Dancers Club. Veronica loved to bake Slovak recipes, and she enjoyed gardening  in her flower and vegetable gardens.

Veronica will be sadly missed by her daughters, Mary Ann (Dennis) Smith of Defiance, and Nancy (Hal) Morgan of Trapper Creek, Alaska, 3 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by parents, Maria and Peter Gulas, husband, Michael Matvey, and eight brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on Monday, June 6, 2016 at Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 pm on Monday at the funeral home, with Father Robert Kill officiating. Burial will take place at Brunersburg Cemetery.
