Thomas O. Stambaugh, 83, of Defiance, died Friday at his residence. He was born in Continental, Ohio on June 26, 1929 the son of C.H. "Pete" & Marvel (Rice) Stambaugh. On October 30, 1971 he married Mary K.(Schorle) Stambaugh who survives in Defiance.
Survivors also include 3 sons, Brad Stambaugh, Key West, FL, Thom (Lisa) Stambaugh, Unionville, Conn, Mark (Molly) Schaefer, Cincinnati, OH. 4 daughters, Kimberly (Darrell) Handy, Defiance, OH, Laurie Gross, Carmel, IN, Patty (Tom) Taggart, Jacksonville, FL, Merideth (Richard) Bucher, Carlisle, PA. 15 grandchildren, and a sister Marian Smart, formerly, of Defiance, currently Nashville, TN. Preceding him in death were his parents, and a brother in law Gene Smart.
Thomas graduated from Continental High School in 1947, Miami University of Ohio in 1951 and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity Alpha Chapter at Miami University. Tom was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army in Germany. He was an Eagle Scout, a member of Bud Widmer's Rube Band and was elected to the post of Defiance City Auditor where he served for 8 years. He was also a member of the Continental American Legion, Defiance VFW Post 3360 and Defiance Elks. Tom was the president of Standard Metal in Malinta, OH and was a sales engineer in the steel fabrication industry for most of his professional life. He was an officer and board member of Auglaize & Kettering County Clubs, and loved both playing and watching the game of golf. He was an avid sports fan, loved crossword puzzles and most especially visiting with his children and grandchildren.
A memorial service celebrating Tom's life will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Hanenkrath Clevenger Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Defiance. Friends may call from 11:00 am until the time of services at 2:00 p.m. The Family requests memorials be made to the Wounded Warrior Project www.woundedwarriorproject.org
