Obituary

Scott Kern, age 61, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 25, 2026, at his home in Bryan, Ohio, surrounded by his loving family. Known to everyone who knew him as the toughest and hardest-working man around, Scott left an indelible mark on this world through his labor, feistiness, and his unwavering faith.

Scott was born on June 21, 1964, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late James and Charlene Kern. From a young age, he developed a legendary work ethic and a deep, foundational relationship with God. His strong faith and powerful testimonies were a guiding light throughout his life, inspiring his family, friends, and everyone who crossed his path.

Family was Scott’s greatest pride and joy. He was a loving, proud father and is survived by his eight children, who carry forward his strength and values: David (Melissa) Kern, Taylor (Jason) Lasley, Kyle (Myah Wagner) Kern all from his first marriage to Jody (Shook) Roehrig. Cade, Jace, Zanna, Zippora, and Leif Kern all from his second marriage to Tiffany Kern. He was the proud grandfather of eight beloved grandchildren (Kaiden, Bentley, Veylee, Sawyer, Lucas, Ezra, Charlotte, and Iylah), a cherished uncle to numerous nieces and nephews, and extended family.

Scott is also survived by his sister Vicky (Keith) Roughton, his brother Mike (Kathy) Kern, and his sister-in-law Marsha Kern.

He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Jim and Char Kern, and his brother, Jeff Kern.

A 1982 graduate of Defiance High School, Scott stayed local and began working for Diehl Incorporated. His legacy though, was how he made a name for himself as one of the best floor coverers and custom tile shower installers around. His skills in his trade were sought after by customers locally and across many states. His pride in his work and knowing that every person deserved his best, earned him many friends and respect in a demanding industry.

Scott also changed many lives through his amazing testimonies that he would give to those in need. He was always ready to lend an ear and advice. His faith carried him through many years of life. That faith was a building block for his children, family, and anyone he had the opportunity to share it with.

A service to celebrate Scott’s life, faith, and legacy will be held at Schaffer Funeral Home (529 Jefferson Ave, Defiance, OH 43512) on Sunday, May 31st from 2-6pm. A short viewing will be held prior to the funeral service on Monday, June 1st from 10-11 with the service immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Scott's honor to the American Cancer Society. Online condolences can be given at www.Schafferfh.com.
