Ruth Ann Burkhart Ruth Ann Burkhart, 74, of Defiance, passed away Saturday, January 18th, 2014 at CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center. She was born in Defiance, Ohio on August 21, 1939. She was the daughter of the late Herman and Elodie T. (Siler) Steffel. Ruth Ann was an English teacher over 35 years for Defiance City Schools retiring from Defiance High School. She was known to her students as Mrs. Weaver and her assignments sometimes gave them "Weaver Fever." She was a member of the Retired Teacher Association, Current Event Club, P. Buckley Moss Society, Master Gardeners, a volunteer at Sauder Village in the School House & Tea Shop where she developed an expertise on tea enabling her to share this interest with others. Ruth Ann was a graduate of Defiance College and obtained her Masters degree in 1971 from Bowling Green University. She was a lifetime member of St. Johns Catholic Church and a member of the church choir. In 2005 Ruth Ann married Philip Burkhart who died in 2009. She will be missed by her sister: Judith (Edward) Collins of Toledo, nephews; Patrick J. Collins and Bruce E. Collins, great niece Barbara Elodie and great nephew Jacob Sven, son: Barry (Carla) Lucas of Indiana, grandson Shawn Lucas and special friend Darrell Thrasher. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 22nd, with Father John Stites officiating. Friends are invited to call Tuesday 3-8 p.m. at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home with a rosary service at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will also be 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the church before the services. The family suggests in lieu of flowers donations to the CHP Defiance Area Hospice Center or to St. Mary's Food Pantry. On line condolences may be shared at www.defiancefuneralhome.com.
