Roger A. Vogelsong, 64, passed away Sunday, May 20, 2012 at his home after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer.
Born in Defiance, Ohio on January 1, 1948, he was the son of the late Ruth (Mohr) McDonald and Wayne Vogelsong.
A graduate of Defiance High School and life-long resident of Defiance County, Roger was a member of St. John's Catholic Church. He served as a member of the United States Navy in the Vietnam War. On March 19, 1971, he married Jennie Cameron.
For over 35 years, he was employed as a journeyman electrician and UAW benefit representative at General Motors Power Train in Defiance, from where he retired in 2006. Roger was also a life member of VFW Post #3360 in Defiance.
An avid Notre Dame Fighting Irish fan, Roger's life-long passion was football. From 1976-1996, "Coach V" coached football at the elementary, junior high, and high school levels for Northeastern Local School District (The Tinora Rams).
Roger enjoyed boating, fishing, and golfing with family and friends at their cottage on Hamilton Lake, as well as vacationing on the Outer Banks.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Jennie and daughters: Amy (Mike) Smith of New Bavaria, Renee (Eric) Rester of Oxford, Alabama, Sarah (Phillip Sr.) Vogelsong of Sherwood, son: Brodie (Nadina) Vogelsong of Defiance, sisters: Deborah (Robert) Smith of Defiance, Diane (Robert) Schaper of Woodburn, IN., Julie (Branko) Mijatovich of New Haven, IN., brother: Michael (Sue) Vogelsong of Apache, OK., father: Wayne Vogelsong, nine grandchildren; Alexandra Bishop. Christian and Cameron Rester, Kade, Karli, and Nathan Vogelsong, Bailey and Kiersten Cline, Wyatt Vogelsong, six step- grandchildren; Trisha Smith, Heather (Josh) Anderson, P. J. and Josh Vogelsong, Brittani Grinnell, Hailey Long and four step-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Roger was preceded in death by two brothers; Robert and Daniel Vogelsong, his mother, and biological father Earl Bodenbender.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John Catholic Church, Defiance, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 24th, with Father Todd Dominique officiating.
Visitation is Wednesday 2-8 at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home 1753 S. Clinton St. Defiance, where there will be a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
