Obituary

Dr. Robert Raymond Southworth, 86, of Defiance, passed away on  Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at the University of Toledo Medical Center.

He was born on August 17, 1927 to Charles and Eleanor (Hoysradt) Southworth in Beverly, MA.   On January 20, 1955 he married Alice Kathleen (Adams) Southworth

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Defiance.  Dr. Southworth was a 1949 graduate of Harvard University, and attended Tufts University Medical School, served his internship at the Receiving Hospital of Detroit, and his residency at The University of Michigan.  He was a primary care physician at Defiance Clinic for 45 years.  Dr. Southworth was a member of the Elks Club of Defiance.  After semi-retiring he worked in the Ohio State Prison system, volunteered at the Mildred Buyer Medical Clinic for the Homeless and for the Rest and Recovery Group at the Defiance County Senior Center.

Dr. Robert is survived by his sons, Stephen (Dawn) Southworth of Tupelo, MS, Christopher (Lori) Southworth of Riviera Beach, FL, Michael (Martha) Southworth of Twinsburg, OH, daughters, Mary Southworth of Defiance, OH, Dawn Salvo of Gloucester, MA, grandchildren, Rachel, Hillary, Nicholas, Morgan, & Maxwell  Southworth and a sister, Jane Southworth of Boothbay Harbor, ME.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his Beloved wife Alice.

Visitation will be from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2014 at Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at the 1st Presbyterian Church with Rev. Eric Peltz officiating.  Burial will take place at a later date in Riverview Memory Gardens, rural Defiance.

The family request memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and/or to the CHP In-Patient Hospice Center.
