Robert R. "Duke" Maag, 80, of Defiance died Monday, March 2, 2009 at St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo.
He was born Oct. 12, 1928 in Defiance, the son of the late Albert and Anna (Randolph) Maag.
Duke was co-owner of Maag's Cafe for 40 years retiring Jan. 1, 1990. He started working in his parents cafe when he was 14 and became an owner at age 21, in 1949. An Army infantry veteran who served in Korea. He was awarded the purple heart. He was a life member of the Defiance VFW, Am Vets, DAV, Eagles, Elks and K of C. He graduated from Defiance High School, played and loved sports, especially basketball. Duke was a longtime and loyal University of Michigan fan.
He was the loving husband of Doris Royal for 55 years. They were married Sept. 26, 1953 and she survives. He was the proud father of 2 children, Jeanne (Jeffery) Batt and Jeffery (Teresa) Maag both of Defiance. Grandpa to 5 grandchildren, Stacy Bailey, Corey Batt, Jennifer Ort, Nicholas and Michelle Maag and 4 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother A. James (Betty) Maag, 2 sisters, Gertrude Deitrick and Marian Gump, all of Defiance.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 Thursday, March 5 at St. Mary's Catholic church. Officiating will be Father Tim Kummerer. The family will receive friends from 2-8 Wednesday, at the Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home. A vigil service will be at 7:00 P:M Wednesday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverview Memory Gardens cemetery where VFW Post # 3360 will conduct honorary military graveside rites.
