Robert O. Colwell, 82, of Defiance, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2015 from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
He was born on February 28, 1933 to Guy and Mae (Hornish) Colwell in Defiance. Robert was a 1951 graduate of Ayersville High School, and he attended Ohio State University. On September 28, 1952 he married Marilyn (Ellsworth) Colwell, who resides in Defiance.
Robert was a lifetime farmer. He was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church in Defiance, and a Charter Member of the South Richland Fire Department, where he was a retired Chief of 20 years. He was an Ayersville school bus driver, on the Landmark Board, a Richland Township Trustee member, a Ridgerunners Farm Bureau Council member, and Defiance County Fair Board member. He enjoyed farming, especially at harvest time, fishing, and woodworking.
Robert is survived by his loving spouse of 63 years, Marilyn Colwell of Defiance, sons, Robert Colwell of Lansing, Michigan, William Colwell of Seattle, Washington, Bruce (Tina) Colwell of Defiance, daughters, Ann (Tony) Thompson of Melbourne, Florida, and Connie Colwell of Defiance, Grandchildren: Holly (Chris) Earl, Michelle (Tony) Steffes, Robert W. Colwell, Steven (Gretchen) Clark, Jeff Colwell, Christopher Colwell, Danielle Wagner, Benjamin Vogel, and Brian Vogel, Great-grandchildren: Caroline Steffes and Henry Clark.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Mae Colwell, daughter, Carol Clark, granddaughter, JoAnn Colwell, sisters, Leona Hohenberger and Rosemary Guilford, niece, Karen Memmer, and nephew, Roger Hohenberger.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, and for one hour prior to services at the church. A firermen service will be at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at St. John Lutheran Church, Defiance, with Rev. Donald Luhring officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
