Obituary

Ricky Allan Spears, 75, cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at his home in Oakwood, Ohio, surrounded by the warmth and love of his family. Born on September 19, 1950, in Paintsville, Kentucky, to the late James B. and Edna (Hill) Spears, Ricky’s journey was one marked by devotion, friendship, and a zest for life.

On November 6, 1973, he united in marriage with Linda L. Baldwin, his beloved wife who preceded him in death on April 17, 2019. A lifelong worker and community member, Ricky spent years mining coal in Kentucky with Boyd Co. Coal Company and Rebel Coal Company before moving to Ohio, where he continued his work career with Isaac Corporation and Metal Management until his retirement in June 2003. He proudly belonged to UAW Local #211 and the United Mine Workers of America, embodying the spirit of dedication and camaraderie.

Known for his warm heart and approachable nature, Ricky never met a stranger or a sweet treat he didn’t enjoy. His passion for the University of Kentucky Basketball was well known among family and friends, alongside his love for hunting, fishing, Bingo, Bluegrass music, and gatherings at the Bluegrass Barn in Oakwood. Most of all, Ricky treasured time with his family, especially the joyful moments shared with his grandchildren.

He leaves behind a loving legacy in his children, Cindy (Dan) Schaffer, Norma Spears, David (Joy) Spears, Brenda (Rodger Carpenter) Fraley, and James (Rose) Spears; 20 adoring grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Judee Spears; and faithful furry companions, Mercedes and Molly.

Ricky was preceded in death by his wife, Linda; parents, James and Edna; grandsons, Dustin and Gabriel Fraley; brothers, Thomas, Mac, Gordon, and Winfred Spears; and sister, Clotene Clark.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Ricky’s life during visitation on Sunday, May 17, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, May 18, with Celebrant Deb Miller officiating. Ricky will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery.

In memory of Ricky’s compassionate spirit, donations are welcomed to Heartland Hospice.

Ricky Allan Spears will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his kindness, laughter, and the love he so freely gave.
