Richard Wesley Wright, 95, of Defiance, peacefully passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2024 at Brookview Healthcare Center. Dick was born on January 10, 1929 to the late Harvey and Elsie (Starkey) Wright in Liberty Center, Ohio. He was a 1947 graduate of Defiance High School. On January 28, 1950 he married Leona Ashbaugh, who preceded him in death on September 7, 2023.
Dick was a Corporal in the United States Army serving in Germany during the Korean War. Dick was a faithful member of the Defiance Church of the Nazarene. He proudly received the Distinguished Service Award at the church, and was president of Prime Timers for many years. Dick was a Pepsi distributor for 33 years and often was referred to as Mr. Pepsi. In his leisure time, he enjoyed collecting Pepsi memorabilia, bowling, and putting puzzles together. He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather, treasuring his time spent with family.
Dick is survived by his sons, Randy (Denise) Wright, Ronald Wright and Jerry Wright, all of Defiance, and his daughters, Penny (Roger) Scott of Bryan, OH and Debra (Daniel) Fishpaw of Defiance. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and brother-in-law Jay (Diane) Ashbaugh of Woodburn, IN. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Leona of 73 years, and his brother, Larry Wright. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 6, 2024 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Defiance Church of the Nazarene, 1656 Jefferson Avenue, Defiance. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the funeral service. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at the church, with Pastor Scott Williams and Pastor Terra Gorrell officiating. Dick will be laid to rest at Riverview Memory Gardens, with military honors conducted by VFW #3360.
Schaffer Funeral Home was honored to assist the family with arrangements. Memorials are suggested to Gideons International or Church of the Nazarene Missions.
