RICHARD A. SLOCUM

Richard (Dick) Albert Slocum, 82, of Defiance, passed away January 2, 2014, at the Laurel's of Defiance.

He was born April 3, 1931, in Defiance, the son of Glen "Doc" and Edna (Roehrig) Slocum. Richard married Janet Lewis on December 13, 1957, and she preceded him in death on March 16, 2006. He served his country in the U.S. Army in the 1950's stateside. A lifelong resident of Defiance, Richard worked 41 years at Johns Manville, retiring in 1996.

He loved to work on appliances and cars, was very interested in the history of Defiance, boated and fished for many years on the local rivers, and especially enjoyed his cat, Sadie. Richard was a member of the Moose Lodge 2094, the Johns Manville Quarter Century Club, former member of VFW 3360, AMVETS Post 54, and Continental American Legion.

Among survivors are his two daughters, Lori Slocum, of Defiance, and Tamara (Kenton) Miller, of Ayersville, five grandsons, Kristopher (Rachel) Pepper, of Midland MI, Joshua (Stacey) Adams, of Uniontown OH, Alex (Jennifer) Adams, of Alexandria VA, and Aaron and Shane Miller of Ayersville, two son-in-laws, Richard Pepper, of Paulding, and Jon Adams, of Defiance. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two daughters, Elizabeth Pepper, and Nancy Adams.

There will be no visitation and funeral plans will be private. Memorials may be made in Richard's memory to the Friends of Felines Rescue Center. Schaffer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
