January 20, 1928 – January 19, 2022
Richard G. "Rich" Romaker, age 93 of Defiance, passed away just one day short of his 94th birthday, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, January 19, 2022. He was born on January 20, 1928 to the late Edward and Cecelia (Drummer) Romaker in Reynolds Corners, Ohio. On September 11, 1948 he married Doris Jean (Johann) Romaker, who preceded him in death on November 23, 2006. Richard proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean War from 1946-1947, and 1951-1953 and received several military honors and awards. Richard was a faithful member of St. John's Catholic Church, VFW #3360, Knights of Columbus #1039, and AmVets #1991 in Defiance. He worked for exactly 37 years to the day as a melting foreman at General Motors in Defiance. He enjoyed helping at K of C fish fries, woodworking, cooking, fishing, and going to the casino. Richard was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Richard is survived by his children; Kenneth Romaker of Defiance, Carol (Ron) Steffel of Brutus, MI, and Ann (Dave) Trivett of Defiance, and his daughter-in-law, Jan Romaker of Florence, WI. He also leaves eight grandchildren; Terry, Joshua and Jason Romaker, Loretta Roberson, Matthew Swoboda, Callie Steffel, Brett Wagner and Brandi Mickelson, eight great-grandchildren; Zoe, Haley, Steven, Giovanna, Eric, Carter, Reece and Joel, and his faithful companion "Doc". In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son Steven Romaker, and brothers Robert and Edward, and his dog "Gertie". Visitation will be held on Monday, January 24, 2022 from 9:00 to 10:30 am at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. Due to CDC guidelines, if you are not fully vaccinated a mask is required to enter the funeral home, and our lounge area will remain closed. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 11:00 am at St. John's Catholic Church in Defiance, with Fr. David Cirata officiating. Burial will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery, with graveside military rites conducted by VFW #3360. Memorials are suggested to Ft. Defiance Humane Society.
