Richard E. Kunz
Richard Edward Kunz, age 90, of Defiance, died at 8:35 A:M Tuesday, June 9, 2009 in the Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.
He was born August 18, 1918, the son of the late Karl F. Kunz and Katherine Ann Leithauser. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Peter (Francis) and Carl G. sister: Clara Ramus, wife: Geraldine (Fronk) Kunz, daughter: Carolyn Rose and two great grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife Lodema (Hesselschwardt)) Kunz, daughters: Rita (John) Tuohy, Mary Shock, and son David (Dianne) Kunz, step daughters, Linda Lord and Lana Vogel, all of Defiance. ten grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, one step great grandchild and his beloved dog Dickie Boy.
Richard was a loving father, grandfather and husband. He had many good friends and knew a lot of people. Richard grew up on Nicholas street. He worked at his brother in law's grocery at St. Michael's Ridge where he met and married Geraldine.
During World War II he served in the 1306 Engineer Corp with the third army under Patton in Europe. His unit built the longest military bridge in world history - Budenheim over the Rhine, longest fixed bridge - Scharding over over the INN, most important bridge Thionville over the Moselle among others. He also served in the South Pacific.
After the war he worked for the Ramus Co. in Adrian, Michigan and then back to Defiance to manage the C. J. Ramus Co. where he worked until retirement in the early 80's.
Richard has been a life long member of St. John's Catholic church. Once a member of the K of C, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge # 2094, Moose Legion 30 Maumee Valley Ohio, American Legion Community Post # 0635 Jewell, Ohio, Life member of the Defiance Fish and Game Association, Michigan Conservation Club and the Evansport Fox club.
Richard was an avid hunter and fisherman. He bagged many deer over the years. Fished whenever possible. His favorite spot was off the Independence Dam
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 A:M Friday, June 12, at St. John Catholic Church. Mass celebrant will be Father Todd Dominique.
Visitation will be 2-9 Thursday at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home with a vigil service at 7:00 P:M.
Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery with military graveside rites.
Suggested memorials are to St. John Catholic church or the American Diabetes Association.
