Phyllis Joan Retcher, 87, born on May 29, 1939, in Defiance County, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 9, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was the daughter of Robert and Wilma (Smith) Goodenough. On May 23, 1959, she married the love of her life, Larry Lee Retcher. Together they shared 61 years of marriage until Larry's passing in 2020. Their marriage was built on faith, love, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to family.

Phyllis was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, cherished great-grandmother, supportive aunt, and faithful friend. She is survived by her three daughters: Debra Cocke of Defiance, Theresa (James) Mansfield of Holgate, and Mickey (D.J.) Zeedyk of Sherwood. She leaves behind six beloved grandchildren: Melisa (Chad) Clark, Emily Cocke (Ben Sandleben), Jeffrey Mansfield, Jamie (Valerie) Mansfield, Joseph Mansfield, and Blake Zeedyk, as well as 15 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought joy and pride to her life.

She was preceded in death by her dearest husband, Larry Lee Retcher; her parents, Robert and Wilma (Smith) Goodenough; her sisters, Doris (Edison) Edwards of Fontana, California, Helen (William) Sobieck of Cecil; and her infant sister, Roberta.

A lifelong woman of faith, Phyllis was a dedicated member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Florida, Ohio. Her faith guided the way she lived each day with humility, compassion, and a servant's heart. She also proudly served her community as a South Richland Fire Department Women’s Sparkler and lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post #3360 Women's Auxiliary.

Phyllis found happiness in life's simple pleasures. She enjoyed reading, sewing, bird watching, gardening, and took great pride in canning. Some of her most treasured memories were made camping and during annual family vacations to Florida, where she delighted in spending time with those she loved dearly.

For more than 40 years, Phyllis was a Premium Production 4-H Club Advisor in Ayersville. The Defiance County Fair held a special place in her heart. Each year she looked forward to supporting her 4-H club members and celebrating three generations of her own family as they learned lifelong skills and embraced the traditions of agriculture and friendly competition.

Phyllis led a simple life centered on faith, family, and service to others. Rather than seeking recognition, she chose to lead by example through her quiet strength and unconditional love. Her greatest joy came from caring for those around her and watching family grow through each new generation.

For the last three years of her life, Phyllis fought cancer with remarkable courage and grace. She refused to let the disease define her, and her strength became an inspiration to everyone privileged to walk alongside her journey. During the final chapter of her life, Phyllis was blessed with an unexpected second family in the compassionate staff at Glenn Park of Defiance. Their kindness, patience, laughter, and genuine love enriched her days and brought comfort not only to Phyllis but her entire family.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. Funeral services to celebrate her life will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, August 13th at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Florida, Ohio, with Pastor Jacob Stuenkel officiating. One hour of additional visitation will be held prior to the service at the church. Phyllis will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery.
