Philip Furnas
Philip Furnas, son of Paul and Dorthe (Smith) Furnas was born in Piqua, Ohio on October 7, 1946. He graduated from Newton High School in Pleasant Hill, Ohio in 1964. He continued his education at Defiance College obtaining his Bachelors of Science degree in Education in 1968 and his Masters of Education at Saint Frances College, Fort Wayne in 1971. He then completed his supervision certification from Bowling Green State University in 1972.
He was employed by the Defiance City Schools as a sixth grade teacher at Spencer School for one year followed by one year at Defiance Middle School. He was named principal of Spencer School in the spring of 1970 where he remained until his retirement in 1998.
On August 7, 1971 he married Patricia (May) at St. John United Church of Christ, Defiance, who survives. He is also survived by a sister Debra Furnas of Liberty Township, Ohio and a brother Paul Craig (Jan) Furnas of Defiance. He will be sadly missed by nephews Bryan (Anna) Wackler of Wyoming, Ohio, Andrew (Katie) Wackler of Mason, Ohio and Stephen (Beth Hahn) Furnas of Defiance and nieces Jennifer Furnas of Huntersville, N.C. and Amanda Furnas of Nashville, Tennessee, and great nieces and nephews Sydney, Reid, Evelyn, and Blake Wackler.
One of Phil's greatest passions was educating young minds and encouraging lifelong learning which he embraced in his own life by traveling the world and always looking forward to his next adventure which he undertook on May 12, 2018 as he peacefully passed at CHP Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center.
Abiding by Phil's wishes there will be no visitation. A private family service is scheduled. A Celebration of Life Open House is being planned for family and friends at a later date to share memories, stories and laughter.

The open house is scheduled for 2-4 p.m. September 8th at the Defiance Country Senior Center 104 E. Broadway St. Defiance - the former Spencer School where Phil was principle.
