Nelson Lawrence Okuley, 99, of Ayersville, passed away Wednesday, November 26, 2025 at Glenn Park Senior Living in Defiance, Ohio. He was born in Northcreek, Ohio on March 14, 1926 to Albert and Monica (Roof) Okuley.
He was proceeded in death by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy (Bauer) Okuley and his daughter, Karen Clemens. He is survived by eight children: Jeanette Okuley, Stephen Okuley, Susan (CP) Foster, Mary Simons, Angela Gerhardinger, Cynthia (Bob) Huffman, John Okuley and Joe (Kimberly Salvage) Okuley as well as a son-in-law, Raymond Clemens. He also leaves behind 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and his sister, Marjorie Brown.
Nelson was a pillar of the community being involved in many aspects including a lifetime member of the volunteer fire department, serving on the school board, mentoring students, 69 years of Boy Scouts and uncovering the truth of the Worthington Cemetery. He was a WW II veteran serving in Okinawa and continued to attend veteran events including an honor flight to D.C.
He was very involved in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren's lives continuing to attend family camping trips, imparting his knowledge to the next generation.
Visitation will be held at Schaffer Funeral Home South, Lawson-Roessner Chapel (1753 S Clinton St.) Defiance, Ohio on Tuesday, December 2, 2025 from 2:00 pm to 8:00pm with a Rosary Service at 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St John Catholic Church on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 at 11:00am. Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.
